📅 ICF is updating its credentialing - here's what it means for your exam ICF has announced a new PCC-MCC Exam from 10 November 2026: 80 items (44 best/worst scenarios and 36 knowledge-based multiple-choice questions) in 150 minutes, built on the latest Core Competencies and Code of Ethics. Until 31 March 2027 PCC and MCC candidates can choose between it and the current 78-item best/worst exam; from 1 April 2027 only the new exam is offered. The ACC exam (60 knowledge questions) does not change. Also from 1 April 2027, ACC and PCC applicants on the Portfolio path no longer submit a recorded Performance Evaluation: enhanced mentor coaching replaces it (MCC keeps the evaluation). We track every ICF announcement and update this tool when anything changes.

A coach with 20 years of corporate leadership experience is coaching a first-time manager struggling with a team conflict. As the client talks, the coach recognises the pattern and feels confident they know exactly what the client should do.

  1. Share the solution that worked in the coach's own career.
  2. Notice the internal pull to advise, set it aside, and ask a curious question to understand the client's unique perspective.
  3. Validate the struggle and offer two or three options based on what the coach has seen work.
  4. Ask what the client has tried, then steer toward the approach the coach believes is correct.

About the ICF Credentialing Exam

The ICF ACC Exam validates a foundational understanding of the ICF definition of coaching, the Core Competencies and the Code of Ethics. It consists of 60 multiple-choice questions with four options and one correct answer, taken in two sections of 39 minutes each with an optional 10-minute break, 90 minutes in total.

The ICF Credentialing Exam, required for the PCC and MCC credentials, contains 78 situational judgment items. Each presents a coaching scenario with four possible actions, and the candidate selects both the best and the worst one. Two sections of 83 minutes each, with an optional 10-minute break, make up the 180-minute exam. From 10 November 2026 ICF also offers a new PCC-MCC Exam (80 items: 44 situational judgment and 36 knowledge-based multiple-choice questions, 150 minutes); the current exam can be taken until 31 March 2027.

Both exams are proctored, computer-based tests delivered by Pearson VUE, in a test centre or online through OnVUE, in 16 languages. Scores are reported on a 200-600 scale and 460 is needed to pass. A failed exam can be retaken after 14 days (then 30 days between further attempts), up to six retakes within 12 months, for a retake fee.
